Whitelisting rules
Hither came Conan the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.
To preserve quality on the server, everyone must make an application to whitelist their character. We try to keep this application process as slim as possible. The whitelisting requirements are listed below.
1. Appearance
1.1 Be human
Your character must be human. There are no playable non-human entities here. This means that your character cannot have fur, claws, horns, tails, non-human eyes or eye colours, et cetera et cetera. Any ‘animal’ feature on your character must be understood as ornamentation or lore-friendly body alterations, such as a horned crown or filed teeth.
1.2 Look human
Your character must look human. More than anything, this means reasonable and attainable body proportions. It also includes realistic skin colour, eye colour, hair colour, facial features, and height. Because you are a reasonable adult, you are expected to understand what humans look like, and this rule will not cover all the myriad ways that a Conan Exiles body can be morphed and shaped to look unhuman.
As a guideline, it should be possible to find a photo of a real-world person who matches your character’s body shape in whole or traits in isolation. Such a photo must not be AI-generated, digitally altered, use deceptive lighting or angles, nor depict a body-builder, professional model, or surgically altered person. You are not actually expected to find such a photo, but in corner cases, you may be asked to provide one.
This is easily the most awkward portion of the application to judge. Humans come in many shapes and sizes, and it can be incredibly difficult to criticise body parts in a way that remains body-positive while preserving humanity. It can also be incredibly difficult or demeaning to receive such criticism. All parties involved must assume good faith.
As applicant, you are expected to do your best to create a human-looking character. If you break this rule in a way that is deemed to be especially egregious, your application may be denied. This rule then serves as a litmus test for the capacity to be a reasonable adult.
1.3 Be an adult
Your character must be at least 21 years old, and they must look the part. All the words written in Look human apply here.
1.4 Be recognisably your character’s race
This rule is incredibly subjective. The Modiphius RPG found in Resources contains many short descriptions of each race in the respective Conan the … book (under the Other Character Aspects section in each book’s first chapter), but they are not conclusive, and some nations have especially varied physical appearances. But as best as you can, create a character that can be recognised by others as being a certain race.
Mind that your character’s race need not match their nation of origin, but this should ideally be a conscious narrative choice.
1.5 Take three good screenshots in your undies
TODO You should include three screenshots. One of your character’s face, one of your character’s body from the front, and one of your character’s body from the side.
1.6 Appearance changes after whitelisting
You are not really supposed to change your character’s appearance after whitelisting, but some options are listed here. These options are incredibly varied, and you should apply sound judgement.
- You are allowed to change your character’s hair style at any time. The hair styles should be vaguely equivalent in length. Your character’s hair can reduce in length whenever you want, but growing hair takes time. Wigs, especially as worn by Stygians, are also allowed.
- You are allowed to change your character’s hair colour by way of hair dye or bleaching. The colours must remain within a realistic human spectrum. These changes are assumed to be lasting, but ultimately reversible.
- You are allowed to add and remove make-up to your character at any time.
- You are allowed to add tattoos to your character at any time. You may not remove any tattoos unless they are henna tattoos. Henna tattoos should last a while.
- You are allowed to add scars to your character at any time—ideally after role-play in which they were inflicted. Scars cannot be removed.
- You are allowed to adjust body sliders to preserve the same body shape after equipping a piece of armour which substantially alters your character’s body shape, or which clips unless you adjust some sliders.
- You are allowed to adjust your character’s skin, hair, and eye colour slightly after being whitelisted. These may reflect the sun’s effect on the skin and hair. Another good reason is that the game’s lighting poorly handles the original colour in some settings.
- You are allowed to adjust your character’s body sliders slightly after being whitelisted. Your character should remain entirely recognisable. This is simply an allowance for slight tweaks.
If you are ever uncertain whether a change is permissible, you may open a ticket.
2. Background
In writing your character’s backstory, you may find the Atlas and Resources helpful.
2.1 Essentials
The application asks you to fill in several fundamental bits of information:
- Your character’s name, which should be appropriate to your character’s culture and may not be a pop-culture reference.
- Your character’s age, which should be 21 or higher.
- Your character’s race.
- Your character’s religion. You are strongly discouraged from playing an irreligious character.
- Whether your character is civilised or barbarian. You may find Civilisation and barbarism helpful.
2.2 Length
Your backstory should be at least two paragraphs in length. Three paragraphs is ideal—a beginning, a middle, and an end. You may write longer backstories for your own creative expression if you want, and we will gladly read them.
Your backstory, whatever its length, should answer several things listed below.
2.3 Lore-accuracy
Your backstory should be accurate to the lore and atmosphere of the Hyborian Age. You needn’t be too worried about this if you feel overwhelmed by the lore—we’ll catch the inaccuracies and work with you on adjusting the backstory accordingly.
You may invent villages, towns, tribes, people, and other such things as part of your backstory. Cities may not be invented.
2.4 Wealth and proximity to power
Your character may have been rich and influential prior to exile. In so much as this shapes a good picture, the upper limit of influence is having been family of the king of a city-state or duke of a province, or having been the chief of a tribe. Pre-exile riches and influence do not translate to privileges in the Exiled Lands.
While your character may have had influence and interactions with powerful people or with (some) lore characters, you should be tactful and convervative about this aspect of your backstory. We want to avoid main character syndrome, lore conflicts between characters’ backstories, and your character having had an outsized impact upon the world. If in doubt, elect instead to place your story one or two steps down the ladder of power. This allows you far greater freedom in writing your backstory, but at a smaller scale.
This rule is more lax than in many role-playing communities, but it is because we trust you, and because the loss of power is a strong theme in Conan Exiles: “First they took your family and your riches…”
2.5 Where is your character from?
Your character should be from somewhere, and this place should be slightly more precise than the nation your character is from. If your character is from a city, you should name that city in your backstory. If your character is from a smaller settlement, it suffices to say, for example, ‘from a village in Shem’.
The map in the Atlas may help you.
2.6 Who was your character prior to exile?
Your backstory should paint a general picture of what your character did prior to exile. Did they have a vocation of some sort? Were they a homekeeper or a slave? Were they a lazy noble?
2.7 Why was your character exiled?
Your backstory should include a reason for your character’s exile. You are encouraged to make your character guilty of a severe crime, or for challenging the powers-that-be. It fosters the atmosphere of the Exiled Lands if most of its inhabitants are exiled for good reasons.
3. Vows
You are asked to make several vows as part of your whitelisting application. While you are understood to agree to abide by all rules, several of them are sufficiently important that you are explicitly asked to consider them.
If you cannot earnestly make any one of these vows, or fundamentally dislike any part of them, then The Thin Veneer is not the server for you.
3.1 I vow to be a kind and reasonable adult who assumes good faith
This vow relates to Be a reasonable adult, Be convivial, and Assume good faith.
3.2 I vow to strive to uphold the atmosphere of the Hyborian Age, even if I am no lore expert
This vow relates to Strive to uphold the atmosphere.
3.3 I vow to be willing to engage in conflict, including mechanical PvP, and to communicate openly with my adversaries
This vow relates to Conflict, especially Declining conflict, PvP, and Communicate.
3.4 I vow not to use generative AI as creative expression on this server
This vow relates to No generative AI.
If you are found to have used generative AI to create your application, your application will be denied.
